What To Expect

If you have never attended therapy or counselling, you might not be sure what to expect during sessions. That is okay. Below are some common questions you might find helpful. If you have any further questions feel free to contact or ask during our first session.

What happens in the first counselling session?
At the beginning of the first session, Stephanie will run through some important paperwork with you. This will include a form which gathers some basic information about you and a consent form that covers confidentiality, fees, and other important information about sessions. If you have been referred by a GP, she will discuss the details of your Mental Health Treatment Plan. The remainder of the session is usually spent discussing the issues that have bought you to therapy and any goals you might have.
What happens in the rest of counselling sessions?
Most of what happens during counselling sessions is talking about the issues that bring you to therapy: the problems you are experiencing and how you feel about them. Stephanie will ask you questions to try to give you insight into why you are feeling this way and how you can start feeling better. You will come to understand yourself better, and have more control over how you feel and react to difficult situations
What do I need to bring with me?
You will need your medicare card and referral from your GP, if you have one. Any reports which might help explain what has been happening can be helpful but are not essential.
Can I bring someone with me?
A support person is welcome to attend with all adult clients. For clients under 16, a parent or guardian is asked to attend the first appointment and remain on-site for the duration of the appointment, even if they are not participating in the session.
How long are sessions?
Sessions are approximately 50 minutes long.
How do I make an appointment?
You can contact Stephanie directly or talk to your GP about a Mental Health Treatment Plan.
